 Training Sessions

Sunday 10.30 a.m. – 12 0’Clock  ( 7 year to 18 years)

Wednesday 7pm - 8.15pm  ( 14 years to 18 years)

Friday 7pm – 8.30pm ( 9 years to 18 years)

Note: Parents/Guardians are requested to be at the track for pick-up of athletes 15 minutes prior to each session ending.

Training for all ages (7 -18 years) to begin with warm up for all on the Track in Dangan. Athletes are then divided into groups for various different disciplines.  Athletes under 12 years of age meet up at the double gates leading out onto the track beside the shed after signing in. U13 - U19 athletes meet on the left hand side of the track after signing in.

Friday Indoor Session for 9 – 11years (Nov – end of March)

We currently run an Indoor Session in the Pavillion at Dangan from Nov to the End of March for ages 9 - 11years.  The focus of this indoor session is the development of good running technique, foot/ankle/lower limb conditioning and injury prevention (i.e. foam rolling). It is highly recommended that our younger athletes attend this session. Athletes attending the Indoor Pavillion sessions are requested to sign in at the Pavillion and not the shed and MUST be accompanied to and from the hall in the Pavillion by an adult for safety reasons.

Athletes should arrive 10 minutes before training to sign in and to be ready to start the warm up on time.

Parents/Guardians are requested to arrive for collection of athletes inside the Pavillion 15 minutes prior to the end of the session. No athlete will be allowed to enter or leave the pavillion hall unless accompanied by an adult.

Occasionally due to weather conditions training may have to be cancelled.  Notice of cancellation will be on the Club Facebook Page Galway City Harries Juvenile/ Website.  There will normally be no training on the dates of Competitions as coaches and athletes attend these events.

The club normally takes a break from training for Easter week, for July and August (with the exception of athletes who have qualified for the National Championships) and for Christmas Week.

Athletes must sign in at the Shed (or Pavillion for Indoors) for All Sessions and all athletes under 12 years must be accompanied by an adult to and from the Track for safety reasons.

Athletes should wear the following gear to training/competition:

- Track suit bottoms/training tights and shorts

- Running Shoes/spikes

- T-shirt and tracksuit top

- Hat/gloves (if cold or wet weather)

- Light rain-coat (if wet weather)

- Bottle of water (for light drinking during training session)

For competitions athletes should also bring some light snacks


Our Coaches have all completed various levels of the Athletic Ireland Coaching Programme. Our coaches are all Volunteers and give up their time freely to assist athletes in the Club.  We are always under pressure for coaches/supervision at training sessions, so please speak to one of the coaches at Training if you would be interested in helping out at any session. Expert knowledge is not required to assist – as this knowledge can be built up over time and the Club funds all Athletic Ireland training courses for interested parties.

Events in which club members participate include sprints, middle distance running, hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot putt and ball throw.

The athletics season is split into 3 seasons:

- Indoors track and field competition from January to April. (usually held   in Athlone IT)
- Outdoors track and field competition from May to July.
- Cross-country competition from October to early December.

Each season comprises County, Provincial and National championships. These championships are roughly 4 weeks apart in each of the 3 seasons.  Athletes must compete in their own age category only with the exception of relays where the rules allow athletes to move up one age group. 

Please note that for Schools Competitions entries need to be done through your child’s school.

The Cross Country Competitions are divided into Even ages (U10/12/14/16/18) and Uneven ages (U9/11/13/15/17/19). The Even and Uneven age competitions are held on separate days and athletes may move up one age group for Cross Country competitions only. 

A more detailed explanation of age groups for competitions is attached separately in this Section. This will help to work out the appropriate age category for your child .

Athletes should arrive at least one hour before their competition time so that they have adequate time to do a warmup and to collect their race number from their coach. Athletes are strongly advised to complete the full warmup before competition that is done prior to every training session on the track in Dangan. 


Vest: Athletes must wear the Club’s running vest when entering competitions. It is advisable for younger athletes to wear a plain white t-shirt beneath the running vest. The running vest is available for purchase from the Club at a cost of €15.

The club encourages all members to participate in the Galway championships. Athletes can also enter for the Provincial Championships but please bear in mind that is event is quite competitive and from which qualification must be obtained in order to compete in the National Championships.

Please watch out for details of upcoming competitions on our Facebook Page and Website and athletes must sign up and select their chosen events for all competitions on the Entry Sheets in the Shed. 

Official results are posted on the club Website and Facebook Page after the events.

Parents of competing athletes are often asked to help out at County events.  All Competitions are run by Volunteers and assistance is always required to ensure the timely running of these events.

Club Gear

Vest: Athletes must wear the Club’s running vest when entering competitions. It is advisable for younger athletes to wear a plain white t-shirt beneath the running vest. The running vest is available for purchase from the Club at a cost of €15.

Hoodies: Black winter Galway City Harriers Hoodies are currently available to purchase from the Club at a cost of €15

Running SpikesThe Club is always grateful for donations of 2nd hand running spikes or Club vests when athletes have finished with them.

Lost Property: Frequently at club training sessions, items of clothing are left behind. If you are missing such belongings, please contact one of the coaches - chances are they have been collected by a coach. Because of the build-up of such property, the club will have to donate it to charity if it is not claimed before the end of the year.
