Streets of Galway Pre Race Report
It’s going to be another exciting year for the Galway Clinic Streets of Galway 8k! We’ve seen Galway city come alive with festival goers over the past couple of months from artists, musicians to fashionistas, but this Saturday evening the city will be buzzing with eager runners and walkers, as the 33rd race takes over the streets of Galway.
The race is once again organised by local athletics club Galway City Harriers AC and sponsored by the Galway Clinic. It takes place on Saturday August 11th at 7pm, starting at GTI on Fr Griffin Road, meandering through the city centre, zooming down St. Mary’s Rd to Salthill where athletes will be cheered home via the Claddagh, finishing at South Park.
Over 3,200 are signed up to run the Streets, our biggest numbers yet! Participants include many Irish internationals, top club runners, as well as thousands of Galwegians and visitors who return every year to take part in this iconic event.
Another top field has been assembled by the Streets committee, with numerous top athletes entered. Among the favourites will be John Travers of Donore Harriers (current National 1500m champion), last year’s winner Kevin Maunsell of Clonmel AC, Ciaran Faherty GCH, from Spiddal (currently based in New Zealand), Hugh Armstrong of Ballina AC and Damien Landers and Rory Chesser of Ennis Track AC.
Others to watch include Eoghan Totten of Newcastle AC and Andrew Annett of North Belfast Harriers. Top local athletes Brendan McDonnell, Neill Keane and Talon Thompson of GCH will all seek to impress and will have their eye on the team prize.
In the Ladies section, multiple Streets of Galway winner Siobhan O’Doherty of Borrisokane AC returns, as do podium finishers from last year Caroline Crowley of Crusaders and Nicola Duncan of Galway City Harriers, with Orla Drumm also of Crusaders likely to run well also.
And of course, local ladies at the top end of the field include Regina Casey and Barbara Dunne of GCH and Jane Ann Meehan of Athenry AC.
Familiar faces taking part this year including Niall McNelis, Mayor of Galway City. And our 3 stalwarts Gerard Murphy, Patrick Larkin and Gerard Meehan who have ran every single Streets of Galway Race since year one!! Now that is some t-shirt collection they must have?!
Many of Ireland’s top athletics clubs have signed up including Crusaders, Raheny and Liffey Valley from Dublin. Over 30 athletes from Mallow AC in Cork are returning to this years race and as always a large number from our neighbours in Mayo AC. Further afield we have Finn Valley AC from Donegal, Ennis Track AC in Clare and as always, all of the top Galway clubs will be well represented.
A host of local Galway businesses and charities are also taking part, including Boston Scientific, HP, Thermo King, Avaya, Galway Rape Crisis and Croi, to name a few. We wish you all a very eventful evening and we hope the inhouse competition won’t be competitive!
Registration and race-pack collection arrangements are as follows:
