BROKEN RECORDS*: A Review of GCH’s 2019 Juvenile Indoor Season

Report by Seamus Lynch

In late 2018 we published a set of GCH club indoor records to coincide with the start of the indoor season.  Little did we know that so many of those records would need to be altered by April 6th, when the 2019 national indoors came to an end.

In all, there were 30 new overall club records broken, with each championship providing further records and Championship Best Performances as follows:

  • 25 best performances by GCH athletes at County Indoors, including 8 CBPs
  • 19 best performances by GCH athletes at Connacht Indoors, including 4 CBPs*
  • 9 best ever performances by GCH athletes at National Indoors

The records are outlined below.

One could easily forget that the season began with Emma Moore setting more CBPs over 200m (26.23s) and 800m (2:21.63) at the County Indoors.  At the same event, Chloe Casey broke the CBP for u19/Senior Long Jump with 5.35m, which is also the best jump ever by a female GCH athlete.  Chloe added a CBP for Shot Putt (11.75m) which has only been bettered in the club by her own throw at last autumn’s combined events.

Ava McKeon and Conor Hoade set new County Indoor CBPs for 60m Hurdles at u15 and u16 respectively.  The full list of GCH best performances at County Indoors are as follows:

At the Connacht Indoors there are no officially printed CBPs, but a set of them has been assembled based on all available results.

Perhaps as a portent of what was to follow at Nationals, Robert McDonnell and Ava McKeon eclipsed previous best performances at these championships in the u18 400m and u15 60m Hurdles respectively.

There was the notable first GCH performer ever in u13 Walk, with Caitlin Podmore setting a new best mark for the club.  Shot Putt saw 4 new club records via Juno Hayes, Aoife Lawton, Gillian McGrath and Aibidh Ni Mhaille, to add to Jodie Quirke’s new club best in AIT at County.  Two athletes (William McDonnell and Eimear Rowe) set bests for the club in 800m.

Finally, the National Indoors arrived late March/early April.

Both Ronan Duggan (60m and 60m Hurdles) and Robert McDonnell (200m and 400m) set new club records – the latter as part of a double gold performance.

Another gold medallist, Matthieu Madden, set a new GCH record for u16 High Jump in what was his second-ever time doing it in competition.

Conor Hoade equalled his 5.77m record from the Indoor Combined Events in the Long Jump while Evan Moran set a fastest u14 60m Hurdles time for a GCH athlete.

And finally, the 4x200m for u12 and u13 was a new event at nationals this year meaning both qualified teams set club records for these championships.  The named squad for u12 Girls was Eva Boo, Juno Hayes, Jessica Kay, Elisa Stapleton plus subs Alysson Strange and Jodie Quirke.  For the boys Ronan Duggan, Conor Faherty, Richard McGrath, Ben Moran plus sub Fionn Dahler was the squad.

Overall, when the season was over – and incorporating the Combined Events, where Conor Hoade and Darragh Jennings medalled - the new club records set this season were as below.  It speaks volumes for the club’s talented past athletes that many of the star performers of this year’s indoor season (Shaun Gilligan and the u17 Boys relay team, Seren O’Toole and the u18 Girls relay team) DIDN’T set new records, despite their terrific performances.

What’s reassuring is that many of those who set those particularly hard-to-break records in the past, like Cillin Green and last year’s u19s, are currently excelling in the senior and intervarsity ranks.

Many congratulations to all listed above and best of luck to all in the outdoor season approaching.  Be it a club record or a Personal Best, all athletes have chances to set new records this Summer!

*It should be noted that there are no official CBPs for Connacht Indoors, but a set has been established based on all historical results available.  Similarly, some records such as 4x200m relays are brand new, as this relay distance was only introduced this year.  Where AIT is mentioned, it is an indication that the record is the best recorded in the AIT arena era only.  All other records are the best of any available historical results available.

Please contact Seamus Lynch, GCH, if any queries regarding these statistics at seamus.lynch@nuigalway.ie or 087 2117697.
