October Senior/Master Cross Country brief reports/results
Galway County Adult Intermediate Cross Country Championships. It was team gold for both the GCH women and men at the recent County Intermediate Championships in Bushfield, Loughrea. Good underfoot conditions on a dry, cool day welcomed the athletes. In the women's 5k race, Julia Britton had a great run to finish in third place followed by Olive Gleeson in fourth and with strong runs from Deirdre McCrae and Majella N Chriocháin, the GCH ladies team took the women's team title. In the Men’s event over an 8km distance, Naoise O’Gibne of GCH took the honours with a strong run, with clubmate Michael Kerrin having a fine run to take third place and with strong running from Brian O'Connor and Kieran Whyte the GCH men's team took the men’s team title.
AAI Autumn Open Cross Country. A number of GCH athletes travelled to Dublin for the recent AAI Open cross Country races. In the Senior Women’s 6k race Laura Shaughnessy of Galway City Harriers finished 8th overall with a strong finish, with Kathryn Casserly finishing 29th overall. In the Senior Men’s race, Eanna Folan made a welcome return to cross country competition and finished 34th in a strong field, just ahead of clubmate Keith Fallon.
Thomas McStay had a great run to finish fourth in the Men’s Junior (U20) race over 6km, with clubmate Barry Murphy an impressive 14th, followed closely by Aaron Brennan in 16th, with Jack Maher 23rd. In the Junior women’s race, Sarah Gilhooley finished a fine twenty fifth.
Connaught Senior/Master Cross Country League Leg 1. Well done to the GCH Senior women’s team who ran in Leg 1 of the adult Cross Country League earlier this month in Longford. A good start to the League for the GCH women's team who packed well to place them in medal contention going into the 2nd Leg with Eilis Ni Dhuill (8th), Cora Grimes (12th), Deirdre McCrae (13th), Eileen McCarty (15th) and Majella Ni Chriochain (28th). Leg 2 will take place on 3rd November. Venue is St. Josephs GAA Club, Hazelwood Road (R286), Sligo.
