National Combined Events Championships. The club had a number of athletes competing at National level last weekend in Santry. In the arduous ten event decathlon, Michael Breathnach performed superbly as he put in two incredibly consistent days of athletics over ten events to win the National decathlon title in a competitive Senior Men’s event.
Conor Hoade was in superb form as he won the U16 National boys pentathlon gold. Conor top scored with 4146 points across the five disciplines of Hurdles, 800m, Shot Putt, High Jump and Long Jump to take the National title.
Equally impressive was Mathieu Madden who produced a fine all round performance when winning silver in the U15 Boys event while Eoghan Jennings also on the decathlon podium, secured a superb silver medal in the Youth Men’s event with a courageous win in the final event, the 1500m.
AAI Games. At the AAI Games in Santry on Saturday, Rob Meagher clocked 49.4 seconds to win his graded 400m race while Cillin Greene clocked 21.9 seconds on his first 200m of the season to take fourth in his race. Laura Nally clocked a swift 57.8 seconds to finish third in the 400m.
Tailteann Games. GCH athletes competed with distinction in the colours of their schools at the historic Tailteann Games competition on Saturday last in Santry. Aoibhe Deeley ran superbly to take bronze in the 80m hurdles, Eimear Rowe fourth over 300m, Barry Murphy 7th in the 1500m and Robert Urquhart also 7th in the 400m while Aibhidh Ni Mhaille of Carraroe /GCH competed on the Connacht squad.
England U20 and U23 Championships. Nicole Walsh made the trip to Bedford in the UK last weekend to compete at the English U20 and U23 championships. Nicole qualified for the u23 400m final where she clocked an impressive 55.22 seconds to finish in sixth place in a very strong field. Jonah Erugo, on his recent return to competition, competed over the 200m in Bedford.
Irish Milers Club. Jack Maher ran a fast 1min 58seconds over 800m at the Irish Miler’s Club meet in Belfast last weekend.
Ironman Ireland. Well done to Jean O’Connor who completed the Ironman in Cork last weekend in not so nice conditions, a 180k bike race followed by a full marathon. The swim part of the Ironman was cancelled due to weather conditions!
Ironman 70.3 European Championships. Well done to Eve Daly competing in Denmark last weekend, a 1.9k swim followed by 90k bike race and ending with a half marathon run !
IAU World Trail Championships. Well done to Nicola Duncan, member of the Irish team that competed at the World Trail Championships in Portugal on 6th June over 44.2km over a difficult trail course.
European Youth Olympics nomination. Congratulations to Robert McDonnell, one of twenty Irish athletes provisionally nominated by Athletics Ireland for the European Youth Olympic festival in Azerbaijan in July. Robert has been nominated for the 400m and the medley relay panel.
Grant Thornton 5k. Takes place at Galway Racecourse in Ballybrit this Thursday June 27th at 7.30pm. The event is a team based event and there will be limited entry on the night available.
National Track & Field League. Round 2 takes place this Sunday 30th June. The GCH mens team, Galway County women’s team and Galway County men’s team will compete in Athlone. All three teams are in a strong position going into round 2 and will be aiming to qualify for the final.
