National Senior Track and Field Championships

Well done to all our athletes who competed at the National Senior Track and Field Championships last weekend in the Morton Stadium in Santry, Dublin. There were some fine performances from all our athletes.

Nicole Walsh won a fabulous bronze medal in a in a top-class Ladies 400m final on Sunday, with a tremendous finish in a personal best time of 54.74.  

Cillin Greene of GCH made the Men’s 400m final on Sunday, following a hard fought qualification on Saturday, and finished in seventh spot behind eventual winner, Chris O’Donnell.

Sean Breathnach continued his National title winning streak, as he won double gold in the throws. On Saturday Sean claimed the Weight for Height throw with a best of 4.40 metres, and on Sunday he won the Wight for Distance throw with 8.27 metres. Sean also took bronze in the Shot Putt.

In the sprint heats on Saturday, Laura Nally finished fifth in the 400m while Aoife Sheehy finished fifth in the 400m Hurdles. Robert Meagher had a terrific run to finish third in his heat of the 400m. In the Mens’ 100m and 200m sprint heats Jonah Erugo and Alex O’Laoi ran credibly strong races with Alex gaining a personal best in the 200m.  John Moroney had a fine run in the 5000m heats (with 15.54) also on Saturday.

International

Robert McDonnell of Galway City Harriers competed in two events at the European Youth Olympics in Baku Azerbaijan on the Irish team last week.  McDonnell excelled in the 400m, clocking a superb new best of 48.42, just missing out on a final place by placing ninth overall. Robert also starred on the 4 x 400m relay team.

International Selection

Congratulations to Nicole Walsh, who has been selected on the Irish 4x400m relay team to take part in the European Athletics Team Championships First League. The event will be held from the 9th to the 11th August in Sandnes, Norway.

Streets of Galway 8k

There is now just over a week to go to the 34th edition of the famous Streets of Galway 8k Road race, which will be held Saturday August 10th next, at 7pm, The race, backed by Galway Clinic, routes from the start line at Fr Griffin Road through the city, and onto Salthill and the Claddagh into the finish at South Park.

National Masters Track & Field takes place on Sunday 17th August in Tullamore. The closing date for club entries is Wednesday 7th August.
