National League Premier Division Round 1 Report, by Brendan Glynn
Thanks to Brendan Glynn for the following report on the GCH Men's National Track & Field League 1st Round of competition, and the summary re Galway County Teams.
Well done the GCH squad who competed in round 1 of the National League in Athlone recently. We had a very much depleted squad with injuries and of course the great Sean Breathnach was captaining the Irish team and unavailable. However the team fought hard and and we’re in 8th place after round 1. 8th is the cutoff to make the final and when we look at the teams behind us – Crusaders AC- 2nd in the final last year, Donore Harriers A/C 4th in final last year – we really need to have a big round 2 to ensure qualification!
Well done to the team!
Diego Alonso Brule Galleguillos made a great debut for the senior team with a fine 4th place finish in the 400mH.
The quartet of Eoghan Dobey, Luke O'Shaughnessy Darren Costello and Shane Canavan came 3rd in the 4x100m - Special thanks to Darren and his mum for making this trip as Darren had to rush home to a match - we love the team spirit!
James Frizzell was a gutsy 4th in the 1500m
Shane Canavan breaks the 50sec 400m barrier again to secure 3rd place and multi talented gains valuable points in the High Jump too.
Robert Meagher shows tremendous class to win the 200m after a long layoff with injury. Rob also secured valuable points in the weight for distance!
Eanna Folan had a great 800m race gaining good points with his 4th place finish
Our 4x400m team was 3rd place! Robert Meagher, Luke O Shaughnessy, Eoghan Dobey and Shane Canavan all stepped up to the plate here.
Brendan Staunton was a point scoring machine with a 1st in the Discus and 4th in the Hammer.
Cliff Jennings as always gained great points with 4th in the Pole Vault and 5th in the Shot putt
Henrique Nkolovata was 5th in the Long Jump and 3rd in the Triple Jump.
Luke gained a valuable couple points for the team in the Javelin!
There were many good performances from GCH as guests too. Eoghan Jennings in the Pole Vault and Brendan Staunton in the Shot Putt. Leonardo Brûlé also had his first 800m race in 30years and shows a lot of promise over the 2 lap event! Leonardo was also fantastic support and took photos of team - we were blessed to have him there!
There was also great support and expertise there with the ever present Matt Lockett, Luis Sc, Thomas McStay, Nicole King, Sonya King and Arran cheering the team and helping all day. There were a bunch of GCH ladies on the Galway County team so it made for very large GCH presence with Rita LaHue, Laura Nally, Cathy MC Kenna, Aoife Sheehy, Lydia Doyle, Emma O Hara, Niamh Hennelly etc.
The Galway ladies team & Galway mens team were there competing on day. The Galway ladies team is comprised of all clubs in Galway including GCH. Sarah Finnegan is team manager and there are many GCH athletes on this team. They were extremely impressive and dominated the ladies premier division. The Galway mens team is comprised of all Galway clubs minus GCH. They’ve started in the first Division but I suspect it’s only a matter of time before they achieve promotion. They had a good day for their first ever outing and they’ll have some big stars available for round 2 and the final. Round 2 takes place on July 30th.
