GCH at the National Masters Track & Field Championships
A terrific day for our Master Athletes at the National Masters Track & Field Championships in Tullamore on Sunday last. The weather didn't deter the GCH athletes who returned home with eighteen individual medals and three team relay medals in the various Master category event races.
In the individual sprint events Majella Loftus took National silver in the 100m and bronze in the 200m. Jim Phelan claimed a well-deserved gold in his 400m race with a personal best time of 53.47 seconds. In the distance races Majella Ni Chriochain took bronze in her 3000m event while Sinead Foran also took bronze in her 1500m race.
Our GCH throwers were in fighting form on the day. Brendan Staunton took National gold in his discus event (34.75m) and claimed silver in his shot putt, hammer (33.61m) and weight for distance events. Sean Breathnach claimed four National gold medals in the javelin (40.37m), shot putt, discus (42.69m) and weight for distance events and also claimed silver in his hammer event (36.99m). A terrific day also for thrower Linas Mitkus who took National gold in the shot putt, discus (38.99m), weight for distance and hammer (36.52m) events.
The relay events at the end of the day were well worth the wait for our athletes. The GCH women’s' teams took National gold in the 4x400m relay and National silver in the 4x100m relays ( Majella Loftus, Sonja King, Kathryn Casserly, Karen Quirke, Jean O'Connor and Sinead Foran). The GCH men’s quartet of Jim Phelan, Ronan O'Conghaile, Eamon Hornibrook and Peter O'Sullivan took National silver in the 4x400m relay. Many of the relay team athletes also competed individually on the day. A fantastic under rated event and highly recommended for all master athletes of all abilities!! Well done everyone!
