Galway 5k Series - Race 1 Ballybrit
Galway City Harriers kicked off the 5k Series at Ballybrit Race Course this evening 26th April 2016. The Series this year has been carefully coordinated by GCH’s Gerry Carty and also sponsored by Galway’s Bradley Renault.
Race Director for the GCH leg was Connaght Cross Country Champion, Niamh Hennelly, her second year to coordinate the race on behave of the club, so a very big thank you to Niamh and her team for all their efforts and a special thanks to the field of marshals from the club who were on form with their support and encouragement. Well done everyone on a very successful race.
The weather, as always, couldn’t decide what it wanted to do throughout the day, it was sunny, cold, hot, windy, wet, we even had hail stones you name it but once the race began it was head down for the runners into the wind (and a small shower)!!! With cold and windy conditions 734 brave souls took to the two loop course. The route was a reverse of the previous course in 2014, which took runners down the dreaded hill this time – TWICE J, unfortunately though this was met by a head wind into the incline at 2k and 4k to home………but none the less we all survived and there was lots of smiles at the end!!!
In the Men’s race Philip Niland (Celbridge AC) took first place in a time of 16.55, followed in second place by Owen Byrne (GCH) in an even 17 minutes and in third was Timmy Glavey (Mayo AC) in 17.09.
In the Women’s race Deirdre Brophy (Athenry AC) who is having a phenomenal year already took the winning title in the first race of the series in 19.39, followed by Caroline Whirskey (Loughrea AC) in 20.09 and in third by Martina Dempsey in 20.14.
Congrats to Marie Boyle who was 4th lady home and her son Ronan Dirrane who was 9th overall…..it must be the genes!!!!
Galway City Harriers were low in numbers this week due to marshalling duties but watch this space in the forthcoming weeks!!!
A massive congrats to all who took part, organised, marshalled and to Galway Race Course for the venue………..here’s to next week in Craughwell!!! Keep up the good work!!!
