Connacht Cross County Championships Day 1 & Day 2
The Connacht Cross Country Championships (Uneven ages) took place in beautiful Beleek Woods today hosted by Moy Valley AC. GCH were winners in the U15 Girls and U19 Boys team events. Emma Moore was victorious in the U15 Girls race to claim the Connacht title. A number of athletes also claimed medals with the Galway team.
In the U11 Girls race Elisa Jamie Stapleton led home the GCH team finishing in 32nd position and she was followed by Eva Boo 42nd, Jessica Kay 50th and Sarah Jane O’Connor 64th. The team finished 8th overall and it was a great experience for the girls in their first Connacht Championships. In the U11 Boys race Carl O’Brien finished in 58th position.
The U13 Girls were just outside the medals in 4th place today with Mia Craughwell and Clodagh Quirke picking up silver medals with the Galway team. Mia had an impressive run to finish 4th overall and was followed by Clodagh in 14th, Adara Salvo 31st, Caitlin Podmore 33rd and Jane Fahy 50th. In the U13 Boys race Richard McGrath and Ronan Duggan finished in 32nd and 50th position.
Emma Moore showed her strength over the 3.5 k course taking the Connacht title in the U15 Girls race and leading the GCH team and the Galway team to Gold medals. She was well supported by Isabella Burke in 11th, who also was part of the winning Galway team, Aoibhe Joyce in 16th, Rachel Fahy 20th, Gillian McGrath 23rd, Leana Nic Dhonncha 24th and Eabha Walsh 25th. The U15 Boys were short a member today unfortunately but Eoin Kileen, Sean Duggan and Brian O’Culain all ran strongly to finish in 8th, 9th and 12th overall and to win Gold with the Galway team.
Eimear Rowe had a great race over the 4K distance and won a bronze medal in the U17 Girls race. Likewise Barry Murphy put in a fine performance in the U17 boys race to finish with a silver medal. Finbarr McFadden also ran well to take 14th position.
Our second Gold team medal of the day came in the U19 Boys race with Thomas McStay and Aaron Brennan battling it out for the honours with the Moy Valley’s Keelan Kilrehill on home turf. Thomas finished with the silver medal behind Kilrehill and Aaron with the bronze medal. They were well supported by Jack Maher in 4th and Rian De Bairead in 8th.
Last week the Even ages Championships took place at Sligo Racecourse. The U14 Girls and U16 Girls teams both were winners of the team event. In the U14 Girls race Aoibhe Joyce finished 6th, Mia Craughwelll 13th, Rachael Fahy 14th, Isabella Burke 17th, Clodagh Quirke 18th and Adara Salvo 23rd.
At U16 level Emma Moore finished 2nd behind Roisin O’Brien from Westport to pick up an individual silver medal . Her team mates Eimear Rowe finished 6th, Eabha Walsh 12th, Gillian McGrath 16th and Nicole Quirke 27th.
In the U12 race Caitlin Podmore was first home for GCH finishing in 23rd place and was followed by Jane Fahy in 43rd and Jodie Quirke 54th. Richard McGrath finished 25th overall in the U12 Boys race.
