Annual Awards Night 2018
We celebrated our 2018 Awards Night on Sunday, 2nd December in a new venue, the Menlo Park Hotel. The event was hosted once again by Club President, Pat O’Dwyer, and over one hundred awards were presented to our club athletes, coaches and volunteers. It was a fabulous event and many thanks to all who attended.
Special mention to Niamh Hennelly, Brian Bruton, Mags Sheridan, Ger Nally and Una Murphy and who worked hard behind the scenes to make the event happen.
It was a great yaer for our Juveniles. Well done to all our athletes that have trained and competed through the year. Our Juvenile numbers are expanding each year. A Big Thank You to all our coaches, volunteers, helpers, and parents who have helped in any way during the year. Special mention to Juvenile Coach, Karen Quirke, for her fantastic contribution to the 7-12 age group in the Club.
2018 was a year of great performances from many of our athletes across many distances, terrains and across many various events – from road to grass to track and field, both Indoors and Outdoors, home and abroad. Awards were presented to our National Medalists and our International Athletes.
We had a difficult task to choose the Athlete of the Year Awards as there were so many deserving athletes in many categories. The recipients were
Junior Female – Aoife Sheehy
Junior Male – Jack Dempsey
Master Female – Majella Loftus
Master Male – Brendan Staunton
Senior Female – Nicole Walsh
Senior Male – Sean Breathnach
It was also an opportunity to acknowledge the volunteer contribution of the Senior Coaches and Fit4Life Leaders and the role they have played in assisting our athletes in reaching their potential.
The Club relies on our many volunteer members who put in a lot of work and effort throughout the year. This year we acknowledged the dedication of the Streets of Galway 8K Committee by awarding them the “Spirit of GCH Award”. The Streets Committee put in thousands of hours of their time in planning and managing the hugely successful event.
Brian Bruton who was awarded “Club Person of the Year” and he received a standing ovation for the hundreds of hours of work he has put in throughout the year (and previous years) for the Club and Athletics at County and National Level. He never looks for recognition or acknowledgement but the Club could not function without him.
We thank all our volunteers most sincerely on behalf of all GCH members.
The Hall of Fame Award went to the legend that is Martin Mc Evilly, a World and European Masters Champion and multiple medalist at steeplechase and on the flat. He is a many times British and Irish Masters Cross Country Champion. GCH are proud to present him with this award.
Club member Leonardo Brule was on hand on the night to take photographs and the link to the full set of photograghs is here.
Full list of Awards presented also here. If anyone needs to have any Certificates reprinted please let contact Una Murphy 087 2258819 and they can be sent on to you.
Again, thank you all for coming along to a most enjoyable event and we hope there will be plenty more to celebrate at the Awards Night 2019!
