Galway athletes in good company in Edinburgh

Congratulations to Gary Thornton, GCH, and Paul McNamara, Athenry, who competed on the Irish team at the World Cross Country Championships in Edinburgh earlier today. The race was won in style by Kenenisa Bekele, who recovered from an unscheduled stop to fix a shoe, to win an unprecedented 6th World Cross Country Long Course title. The Irish team was led home by Andrew Ledwith, followed by Paul Mc Namara, Mick Clohissey, Brian Maher and Gary Thornton. Alistair Cragg and Vincent Mulvey did not finish.

St. Patrick's Weekend Action Round-Up

G.C.H. athletes travelled far and wide this St. Patrick's weekend, competing in some of the many events taking place over the holiday.

On Saturday Orla Ni Mhuircheartaigh continued her winning streak, this time over the hills and trails of the Wicklow Way at the University Mountain Running Championships. Representing NUIG, Orla won her debut mountain race, from two members of the 2007 Irish team. The race was organised by IMRA, the Irish Mountain Running Association.

GCH in Adare 10k Results

GCH's Gerry Ryan was back in action last weekend winning the Adare 10k road race. Gerry won the race, organised by West Limerick A.C., in a time of 31:17 from Pat McCartan, West Limerick in 2nd with 31:59.

Also winning their categories with impressive runs were Ian Egan and Martin McEvilly who posted times of 34:02 and 36:21 respectively.

Gary Thornton earns selection for World CC

Gary Thornton finished inside the top 10 in Belfast today, to earn a qualifying spot for the upcoming World Cross-Country Championships.

The Senior InterClub Cross Country was held at the Upper Malone Playing fields in Belfast where Gary finished in 8th place, just behind Paul McNamara of Athenry AC in 7th. Both earned their qualification for the world cross-country to be held in Edinburgh at the end of March. The race had a surprise and controversial winner in Cork athlete Cathal Lombard who won from Alastair Cragg in 2nd place.

Martin McEvilly and Brian Geraghty Win National Masters Indoor Titles

GCH athletes Martin McEvilly and Brian Geraghty travelled to the indoor stadium in Nenagh on Saturday to compete in the National Masters Indoor Championships. Both competed superbly and returned home with the 3 Gold Medals between them. Our picture shows Martin on the left with Martin Corcoran and Ian Egan after the Galway Cross-Country Championships earlier this year.

Orla and Martin Win in Wexford

Orla Ni Mhuircheartaigh won the Intermediate Women's Cross Country Championship of Ireland earlier today. The race, over 4000m was held in good conditions over a tough course in Piercestown, Wexford. Orla pulled away from Maria Halley, Ferrybank AC, on the last lap to win comfortably.

Martin Mc Evilly was also victorious in Wexford, winning the National Master's Men Cross Country V5 category. Martin had 20 sec to spare from JJ Murphy, Tinryland, in 2nd.
