Results/news catch up week ended 29th September

Berlin Marathon. Well done to our GCH athletes who ran the Berlin Marathon last weekend. An impressive 2:19:06 from Ciaran Faherty who placed 65th overall.  Martin Kearney finished second in his age category in a terrific 2:59:10, Malachy Wolohan ran 3:14:58, Dave Keaney 2:53:15, Karen Quirke 3:49:36, Leonor Rodriguez 4:14:02. Well done all!

Loughrea 10k. In Loughrea, first GCH male was Paul Keane in 38.19 while first GCH female was Mary Kealy.

European Masters Championships

The European Masters Track and Field competition concluded on September 15th after 12 days of competition in Venice, Italy. A belated congratulations to GCH sprinter Jim Phelan, pictured below with his relay medals along with sprint coach Brendan Glynn. Jim had a fantastic week of competition. After two terrific performances in the qualifying rounds Jim made the 400m o45 individual final where he placed a credible fifth in a new personal best of 53.23 seconds!

Results catch up week ended 15th September

Westport festival of Athletics. At the Westport 10k, Laura Shaughnessy finished first female in 35.49 with Regina Casey third in 37.09. Along with Adrienne Walsh (second o65) the GCH women took the second team prize. The previous evening the four-man GCH squad of James Frizzell, Barry Murphy, Jack Maher and Keith Fallon won the 4 X 1 Mile Relay event held at the Westport track.

Rathoath Half Marathon.Christine Kennedy posted a terrific time of 1 hr 30mins 45 secs at the Rathoath half marathon in County Meath.  (2nd o50).

Below are dates to hand for current local AAI permitted Road races.

Saturday 24th August. Claregalway 10k, 6pm. Late Entries (taken up to 5.30pm) at the Claregalway Community Centre.

Saturday 31st August. Caltra AC 5k, 11am. (incorporating County 5k Championships). Registration from 9.30am in Caltra Community Centre on the day.

European Team Championships

Nicole Walsh of Galway City Harriers competed for Ireland at the European Team Track and Field Championships held in Norway on the weekend of the 11/12th August. The talented sprinter ran on the Irish 4x400m relay squad and helped them to fourth place overall in the race on her senior debut for her country.

National Senior Track and Field Championships

Well done to all our athletes who competed at the National Senior Track and Field Championships last weekend in the Morton Stadium in Santry, Dublin. There were some fine performances from all our athletes.

Nicole Walsh won a fabulous bronze medal in a in a top-class Ladies 400m final on Sunday, with a tremendous finish in a personal best time of 54.74.

GCH Mens Team at the National League Final. Report by Cliff.

Well done to our GCH men’s team and Manager Cliff Jennings who secured a well-deserved bronze in the National league final on Saturday last in Tullamore. Thank you to Cliff for the report below.

After scraping through the qualifying rounds in 8th place, we finally had an almost full strength team for the League final. Big Sean was back even though not 100% fit. Seamus was back in for the walk and Andrew came out of steeplechase retirement to give it a go and between them they scored some big points.

National Track and Field League Final. Congratulations to the GCH men’s’ team who took a well-deserved National bronze at the Premier League final in Tullamore on Saturday last behind Clonliffe Harriers and Raheny Shamrocks. A determined, gutsy performance by the team on the day saw them clinch third place by the narrowest of margins. Well done to all who competed on the team over the two qualifying rounds and to Manager Cliff Jennings. A detailed report will be published on the website.

International athletics. European under 20 Championships. Congrats to Laura Nally who is travelling with the Irish under 20 Team as a member of the 4x400m Relay panel for the U20 European Championships in Boras, Sweden which will be held from today the 18th July to the 21st July. Round 1 of the 400 relays takes place at noon on Saturday with the final on Sunday evening. Timetable link and livestreaming link.
