GCH Club Challenge 2014 Results (Event 13, Round 2)

The second day of the Connacht cross country held in Westport House last Sunday. The venue was superb for a more traditional cross country course with lots of hills and muck. The heavy passing showers made underfoot conditions difficult and several GCH participants fell during the races but everybody finished.

With the results now in, there have been some small but significant changes at the top of the leaderboards in both the men's and women's events.

Jane Walsh by managing to stay upright in Westport has eked out another 3 points in her lead over Mags Sheridan. In a sport of miles these 'inches' may makes all the difference come St. Stephen's Day.
On the men's side of things Martin Kearney and Martin McEvilly put further daylight between themselves and the chasing pack and the major honours are surely between the two of them now. The elder statesmen of the club are showing the young bucks the way to do it. Vincent Jordan is still keeping his name in the mix and has moved back into third place overall due to his efforts in Mayo.

Next up is more cross country. The National Senior / Novices.

Latest club challenge results after round one of the Connacht cross country. Also, some mistakes from the National Half Marathon were cleared up, these have effected the standings slightly.

In the women's even Jane and Mags are going down to the wire. Mags finished ahead of Jane in the Connacht cross country but Jane maintains a lead of only 2 points. Niamh Hennelly has been creeping up on the outside and could still be in with a shout.

In the women's section the year long battle between Jane and Mags(fresh from a great run in Dublin) still rages with them filling 1st and 2nd respectively. However there is a new threat on the scene. After a superb 3:12 finish in the Dublin Marathon (and run with a constant smile on her face) Grainne Ni Uallachain is now in third place and is poised to move up the placings if she finishes well in another race this year.

Jane, Martin, Mags
The latest Club Challenge after the Grey Lakes 10km and the Galway County Cross Country, both held in Loughrea in the last couple of weeks. The Cross Country was very well attended with 24 Harriers competing in the adult races.

In the women's challenge it looks like it's becoming another head to head between Jane and Mags. However Grainne and Niamh could challenge if they feature strongly in at least 2 of the remaining 4 events.

In the men's challenge Martin McEvilly is rolling back the years by topping the table going into the tailend of the season. Vincent Jordan lies second currently, but Martin Kearney is in a solid third with a race in hand so is well placed for a jump into the lead after one more race.

Upcoming races include the National Marathon in Dublin and the Connacht Cross Country on 2nd & 9th November.

The 4th event of the 2014 GCH Club Challenge took place at Craughwell 10 mile on Sunday 23rd March.

We had a great turnout of GCH participants on the day and a guest appearance by the sunshine also.

There were lots of new faces at this event and hopefully this is just the start of many more appearances at the challenges.

We also saw lots of County Medals come from Craughwell so well done to everyone on their achievements!

Well done to everyone who has taken part in the challenge to date.

Remember the next event is the Craughwell 10 mile in 23rd March.

There have been some slight changes to the scoring system.  These changes make showing up a lot more valuable than not showing up and rewards everyone who does.
Thanks to Vincent Jordan for these suggestions.

• Points are scored as follows:
- 30 for the 1st GCH finisher, 29 for the 2nd, 28 for the 3rd, all the way down to the 20th GCH finisher who gets 11 point.  All subsequent GCH finishers will receive 10 points.

In the men's challenge the National Novices didn't really change the table much with Brian Bruton needing to be in the top 2 GCH finishers to push into second place.

The women's challenge is down to the last race of the series..................

Due to Jane and Mags both travelling to the National Novices and not only representing their county and club but they have also managed to score valuable points for the CGH Club Challenge in the process.

Results of the GCH Club Challenge after Round 8.

It's heating up in the race for the women's title with Mags, Majella, Jane and Regina all still in contention…..exciting stuff with just 2 more rounds to go!!

In the Men’s race, 2nd place which is still up for grabs, with Bru in typical fashion putting in a late surge which could clinch the runner's up spot.

Watch this space, The Athenry 10k could see some road kill left behind in a last dash for titles…………

The Club Challenge is still underway for 2013. I have attached a copy of the Men’s and Women’s results which are updated as far as the Grey Lakes County 10k.

The Cross Country season is upon us so those of you partaking in these races over the forthcoming weeks have a chance to raise the competition.
(The County XC will be added during the week, when final results are available)
