Galway City Harriers women’s and men’s teams competed in two rounds of the Indoor League to make it to the final last weekend. The final was held at the National Indoor Arena, in Abbottstown, Dublin. After a lot of last minute reshuffling due to illness and injury, both teams really stepped up with many of the athletes doubling up in events.
GCH’s Gary Thornton is the 2018 World Marathon Challenge Champion after completing 7 Marathons in 7 Continents in 7 Days. Amazingly, Gary was first marathoner across the line in six of the marathons and co first in one when crossing the line with Jason Cousins of Great Britain. The Challenge began on January 30th with the first marathon in Antarctica (Novo) in 2:58:39. Africa followed on January 31st (Capetown). Marathon number three took place in Australia (Perth) on February 1st, and the following day it was onto Asia (Dubai).

The very best of luck to our under 20 Cross Country Team of Aaron Brennan, Eanna Folan, Michael Healy, Gary Martyn and Thomas McStay who compete at the European Clubs Cross Country this Sunday, 4th February in Mira, Portugal. Coach Matt Lockett and Team Manager Brian Bruton will accompany the team.
This weekend will see our Women’s and Men’s League teams in action at the National Indoor League Final. The final takes place this Saturday 3rd February in The National Indoor Arena, Abbottstown, Dublin. Both teams have already gone through two rounds of competitive competition to qualify for the final and expect to have two strong teams competing on the day. Club Information Evening.
For anyone new to Athletics or anyone who wants to know more about the various competitions and seasons in athletics they are welcome to come along to a Club Information evening in Craughwell Community Centre this evening, Tuesday 30th January, at 8pm.

The National Masters and Intermediate Cross Country Championships, along with Juvenile B/Relays takes place in in Kilcornan Estate, Clarinbridge on Sunday, 11th February. The Galway County Athletics Board has worked hard to secure the event/venue for the West. At the end of 2017, our Club was the biggest Athletics Club in Ireland, and it would be great to reflect this by fielding teams in the Masters and Intermediate races.

Sat & Sun 17th and 18th February. National Senior Indoors, Abbottstown. (Closing date Thursday 8th February)
The 2018 Connacht Indoor Championships take place on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th February in Athlone Institute of Technology. This event is open to all GCH registered athletes in the U12 – U19 age groups. This competition is however more competitive than the county championships and best suits athletes with reasonable levels of fitness.
There will be no juvenile training in Dangan on Sunday 25th February as athletes and coaches travel to this event.
We celebrated our Awards Night on Friday 19th January in the Westwood Hotel. The event was hosted by Club President, Pat O’Dwyer, and over one hundred awards were presented to our club athletes, coaches and volunteers. It was a fabulous event and many thanks to all who attended.
Special mention to Brian Bruton, Mags Sheridan, Ger Nally, Una Murphy and Cormac O’Connor who worked hard behind the scenes to make the event happen.
