Day 2 of the National Championships took place in Athlone on Sunday and there were once again several outstanding performances for our athletes who won six additional national medals on the day. Over the two days the club has brought home 11 national medals this year, a measure of the work that these athletes have put in over the winter months.
It was double gold for Sean Breathnach at the very competitive European Masters Indoor Championships, held over this past week in Madrid. A delighted Sean, current holder of the Irish Indoor shot putt record, took gold in the master 35 men category with a super throw of 18.06 on Wednesday, and went on the following day to take gold in the m35 discus with a throw of 47.46.
Day 1 of the National Indoor Championships took place on Sunday at Athlone IT. There were many notable accomplishments from our GCH athletes with the club taking home 5 national medals and it was heartening to see that there were numerous personal best performances on the day.
Richard McGrath showed his class in the U12 Boys 60m sprint where he finished in the silver medal position after yet another great battle with Darragh Fahy from Loughrea.
Please note the following changes to Juvenile training over the next few weeks due to the National Championships and the Easter break.
There will be no training for U13s and older on the following dates;
- Sunday 18th March - Day 1 National Championships
- Sunday 25th March - Day 2 National Championships
Training will go ahead for the 7 – 12 year olds as normal on the 18th & 25th March.
The 2018 GCH Bursary/Athlete Support Fund is now open for applications. Forms are attached and should be completed returned to firstname.lastname@example.org by 20th March.
Bursary payments will be dependent upon club funds being available and will be awarded at the discretion of the Galway City Harriers bursary committee and/or management committee . The committee retain the right to withhold payment if the conditions below are not satisfied.
Applicant must be a paid up member of Galway City Harriers.
It was quite a busy and successful weekend for GCH athletes, with great performances all round at the various competitions – local, National and International.
With some of last weekends competitions cancelled due to the weather, this Saturday (10th March) will see GCH athletes compete around the country in three seperate events. The National Master Indoor Championships takes place in Athlone IT.
The All Ireland Schools Cross Country takes place in waterford IT, while the Inter Varsity Cross Country takes place in the Trinity Sports Grounds in Santry Woods in Dublin.
